The USA is going to need a really big birthday cake because it’s turning 246 this 4th of July! You know what that means: fireworks, baseball games, and BBQs with family and friends. For families with little ones running around, Independence Day is a great time to entertain with creative 4th of July activities for kids.Â
Flag Craft for 2 to 3-year-olds 👣
If you have toddlers at home, most likely they’re learning how to speak and identify new things. This is especially true in terms of colors! What better way to teach them red, white, and blue than a little hand-painting session?
🇺🇸 Materials needed:
- Large sheets of paper
- Cleaning towels
- A container
- Red, white and blue paint
This craft will let toddlers replicate the American flag! It will be a fun, sensory activity for your little ones and will turn into a precious memento for families to hang up every 4th of July.Â
Instructions:Â
- Place newspaper across a large area to avoid getting paint on your floors.Â
- Place a large sheet of paper horizontally on the floor. This will be the flag.
- Paint your child’s hand blue and have them make handprints in the top left corner of the paper. (We recommend doing four handprints across and three handprints down so that it’s 4×3.) Wipe off the paint from their hands once finished.
- Paint your child’s foot red and have them create the stripes of the flag.
Sounds messy? We’re not going to lie–it will be. But, the messier the project, the more fun for the kiddos!
Bracelet Craft for 4 to 6-year-olds 📿
Teach your youngsters about colors, hand-eye coordination, and the 4th of July by making bracelets! Not only will the kids enjoy creating jewelry, but it’ll be great practice for them to strengthen their fine motor skills.Â
🇺🇸 Materials needed:Â
- StringÂ
- Patriotic colored beads (red, white, blue, gold, silver)
Instructions:
- Show your child how to make a loop at the end of the piece of string. Make sure to secure it with a thick knot.Â
- Teach them about patterns by stringing on the colors in specific ways. Try alternating each color, two at a time, or random. They get to be the designer here!
- Place the beaded string around their wrist and help them tie it tightly so that it doesn’t break.Â
⚠️ Just be sure to supervise so beads don’t end up in anybody’s mouth. Your little ones will love the opportunity to design bracelets for the whole family!Â
Firework Activity for 7 to 8 year-olds 🎆
Let’s be real, fireworks are pretty awesome, but they’re not the safest for kids. Luckily, there are alternatives that don’t involve fire or explosives… “fireworks in a jar.” This scientific and creative activity is perfect for older children!Â
🇺🇸 Materials needed:
- 4 different shades of food coloring
- Vegetable oil
- A table spoon
- A big Mason jar
- Warm water
Instructions:
- Fill the Mason jar with warm water
- Add four tablespoons of vegetable oil to the jar
- Add four drops of each food coloring to the jar
- Mix the colors with a spoon and prepare to be mesmerizedÂ
